Stroke

What is a “stroke?”

A stroke is a medical condition that occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, leading to the death of brain cells. It is a severe and potentially life-threatening event that requires immediate medical attention. Recognizing the symptoms of a stroke is crucial because prompt medical care can make a significant difference in the outcome.

Recognize Stroke Symptoms

Common stroke symptoms include sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg. Especially if noticed on one side of the body. Other signs include difficulty speaking or understanding speech, sudden confusion, severe headache, dizziness, and trouble with coordination or balance. It is important to remember the acronym BEFAST. This stands for Balance, Eyes, Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, and Time to call emergency services.

Call 911 for a Stroke

Seeking medical care without delay is crucial because timely treatment can improve the chances of recovery. Doctors can administer clot-busting medications or perform procedures to remove the clot, depending on the type of stroke. Delaying medical attention can result in permanent disability, cognitive impairments, or even death. If you or someone you know experiences stroke symptoms, do not hesitate to call emergency services immediately. In the United States and Canada, call 911. In the UK, call 999 or 112.
